Today, I’ll be borrowing the hat of a Cybersecurity Analyst who after hearing the song again recently, is boiling in righteous anger, 😤 and is going all out to clear the air on the “gloriousness” of cybercrimes. Who is a Cybersecurity Analyst?  

A Cybersecurity Analyst is an entry-level role that ensures an organization’s computer networks are free from cyber-attacks and unapproved access. Cybersecurity Analysts are key players in securing any organization’s valuable information.   

This role involves monitoring network traffic, investigating security incidents in real-time, and responding to breaches effectively. They also manage security software installations like firewalls and encryption programs.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Cybersecurity Analyst  

• Monitoring and Reporting  

A Cybersecurity Analyst is constantly searching for potential security breaches by monitoring computer networks. This salient task involves using advanced tools to detect unauthorized access or suspicious activities that could indicate a threat. We also prepare reports on security incidents, which detail our findings and recommendations to prevent future breaches, ensuring that management is well-informed about the security position of the company.  

• Configuring Security Tools  

We handle the installation and operation of security software such as firewalls, encryption programs, and antivirus tools. These are essential for protecting the network and data from cyber threats. We regularly update these tools and configure them to meet the specific needs of our organization, protecting against vulnerabilities and enhancing our defense.  

• Evaluating Weaknesses  

Cybersecurity Analysts perform regular risk assessments and penetration tests to identify and address vulnerabilities within the system. This proactive approach helps in maintaining a high-security standard. It also helps in understanding where and how the organization might be exposed to potential cyberattacks. We collaborate with the security team to develop and promote best practices throughout the organization.  

Key Skills Required for a Cybersecurity Analyst  

• Technical Skills  

Cybersecurity Analysts must have a deep understanding of network security. They must be proficient in programming and scripting using languages like Python or PowerShell to enable the building of custom tools.   

• Analytical Skills  

Analytical skills are needed to process and interpret large amounts of data. This involves careful attention to detail to determine indicators of potential security threats and to ensure crucial processes are not overlooked.  

• Communication Skills  

Cybersecurity Analysts must be able to convey complex technical information in simple terms to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that everyone understands the cybersecurity risks and the measures needed to mitigate them. This also includes writing clear and concise reports that summarize security findings and recommendations.  

• Creative Thinking  

Cybersecurity professionals must always think outside the box to offer new solutions to security problems. They must also pay attention to detail, ensuring that even the smallest loopholes that could lead to a security breach are identified. 

Education Requirements for Cybersecurity Careers  

Most cybersecurity analysts begin their journey with a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or Engineering. However, with the right certifications, even those without a degree can secure entry-level positions in the industry. Getting the right certifications is essential at all career stages for the cybersecurity professional.  

Job Outlook and Salary  

The demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is predicted to rise by 32% through 2032. This is significantly higher than many other sectors. The average entry-level cybersecurity professional earns between N200,000 – N300,000 monthly! Entry-level professional o! Monthly o! Sweet, right?  

Continuous learning and specialization in certain areas like Penetration Testing can further improve career prospects and earning potential.
