Crushing Online Learning: 6 Study Tips for Effective Virtual Learning

You’ve heard the buzz, and you might wonder, “Is online learning really all that?” The answer is a resounding “yes!”. The global pandemic in 2020 forced individuals, educational institutions and businesses to shift rapidly to online learning, and since then e-learning has continued to evolve and grow. E-learning isn’t just a trend; it’s a revolutionary approach to learning.

Online courses have become our companions on the journey to personal and professional development. However, mastering the art of online studying is a bit like taming a wild horse – it may seem challenging, but with the right approach, it can be thrilling and rewarding.

So, how do you make the most of your e-learning experience and thrive in your learning journey? You’re in the right place. Here, we’ll explore the secrets and strategies to effective online studying. Get ready for an enlightening read!

  • Get a Comfy Place to Study

When it comes to online studying, your study space is all so important. Find a cozy corner that’s all yours. Add some comfy pillows and hang up a “Do Not Disturb” sign. I remember doing this during an Easter holiday a few years ago. I had a lot of studying to do and didn’t want my flat mates knocking at my door, so I hung up a door sign. Boy, did it help? They must have figured, ‘omo, this girl is serious o.” Also, do not forget to ensure that your internet connection is strong too (sighs in Naija ‘5G’ network).

  • Look and Feel the Part

Dear reader, even if you’re studying from the comfort of your home, do not underestimate the power of getting dressed. While online learning offers the flexibility of attending classes in your pyjamas, there’s something empowering about dressing the part. It sets the tone for a productive learning experience. It signals to your brain that it’s time to transition into study mode.

Think of it this way- if you were attending a physical lecture, you’d take a bath and get dressed before getting to class, wouldn’t you? (except you don’t think baths are necessary, and why you’d think that beats me 🤷🏼‍♀️).

So, put on your “study outfit” (whatever that looks like to you), and suddenly, you’ll feel more in the zone. It’s like a superhero getting dressed up for a mission. You’re starting to get the vibe abi. 😉

  • Get Rid of Distractions

In your noble quest for knowledge, you’ll encounter challenges as you study online. Email notifications, social media notifications, texts and calls, that interesting TV advert (don’t know if people still watch tv sha), and so much more. Don’t let them stop you from achieving your learning goals. I’ll advice that you put your phone on silent and turn off the TV. I see you getting tempted by your favourite YouTube Series. Hey! Stay focused!

  • Engage with Others

You need a learning ally to keep you motivated and accountable. Most of us do. Interact with fellow students if it’s a group study. Join forums, ask questions, and share your insights. Just today, I saw a post where this lady talked about how her sister would call whenever she wanted to study. “You don’t have to say anything. You can go ahead doing your stuff, I just need to know that someone is here with me. It keeps me going somehow”, that’s what the sister said.

I’ve never asked anyone to do this, but I can totally relate as my younger sister used to be my learning partner when we were kids. I talked a bit about that here. Learning is more fun when you have a partner. Which is why at Certifications by Unify, we are developing Cohort-based and Community-driven learning, because e no easy, we know, but together, we gather dey.

  • Reward Yourself

Don’t forget to take breaks in between. Remember the Pomodoro Technique I talked about in the last blog article? After every 20–30-minute session of studying, reward yourself with a 5-minute break. Grab a healthy snack, hydrate, and stretch. This helps keep your body recharged and your mind alert. Then after a successful study session, do well to celebrate! A treat, a movie, or some dancing around, whatever works best for you. Rewards keep the motivation flowing.

  • Seek a Mentor

In your e-learning journey, if you ever find the path challenging and need expert guidance, don’t hesitate to seek a mentor. Enroll in courses that offer lessons from experienced teachers. Courses on Certifications by Unify are expertly curated by industry leaders and mentors to help position you for success in your career and endeavours.

Mentors possess a wealth of knowledge, and their expertise can significantly impact your learning journey. They often share real-world experiences and scenarios that can be particularly valuable if your e-learning journey is focused on professional or career development.
